Animal Ark A Sancuary for Life
Tiger

Animal Picture Shere Khan

Common Name: Asian Tiger
Scientific Name: Panthera tigris
Gender: Male
Birth Date: August 1993
History: Shere Khan is a mixture of the Bengal and Sumatran subspecies.  He was born in captivity and sold as a kitten with his littermates for use in a television commercial.  Shere and his sister, Taja, were not chosen for the film work.  Later that year they were donated to Animal Ark for exhibit and educational purposes.  Tigers are an endangered species.  Outside of protected areas, they are quickly disappearing. The decline in tiger population is directly related to poaching and habitat destruction by humans. Sadly, Taja passed away in November of 2009. While at Animal Ark, Shere Khan continues to serve as an ambassador for tigers in the wild.
